Many kids’ bedrooms are space-challenged and every bit of space helps. There’s no such thing as too much storage, for example, in a kid’s bedroom. One ideal method to make up for limited space in a usual child’s bedroom is to go vertical by placing a bunk bed in the room. Another advantage of bunk beds is that most can be separated into individual beds. Although a bunk bed is a great piece of typical kids' bedroom furniture, there are some less obvious yet potentially serious hazards associated with them. Here are some safety tips to help prevent serious or fatal injuries from entrapment or falls:
- Never allow a child which is under 6 years of age on the upper bunk.
- Only use a mattress which is 75” long and 37.5” - 38.5” wide on the upper bunk.
- Ensure that the thickness of mattress does not exceed 8” and also ensure that the mattress is at least 5” below the upper edge of guardrails.
- Use guardrails on both sides of upper bunk.
- Forbid any horseplay on or under the bed(s).
- Forbid more than one person to be on the upper bunk.
- Always use the ladder for entering and leaving the upper bunk.
- STRANGULATION HAZARD - Never hang or attach items to any part of the bunk bed that are not specifically designed for use with the bunk bed; for example but not limited to hooks, belts, and jump-ropes.
